This was the only restaurant we dined at in New York, after a good number of hours walking down Broadway through SoHo. I was really looking forward to our reservations at City Lobster & Steakhouse and Fig & Olives but we were short on time as we tried to fit all the shopping and tourist attractions in one day. I was really disappointed in myself from the food decisions I made (i.e. greasy chinese takeout, pizza delivery, 20 pack of mcnuggets) which made me appreciate Cafe Bari even more. If you ever dine in New York, just heads up that a 20% tip is required, even for taxi rides!

Let's just say everything went downhill from my visit to Sassafraz a couple of weeks back.

Appetizer: Muskoka Wild Mushroom Bisque - Porcini & Rosemary Scented Cream, Infused with Fireweed Honey
- To keep it short, it tasted like any typical cream of mushroom soup. As a matter of fact, it tasted like the ones that are made from Campbell's. Not impressed.

Entree: Black Tiger Shrimp Pappardelle Pasta - Sautéed Black Tiger Shrimps with Green Asparagus, Roasted Peppers, Charred Fennel, Garlic & Shallot Pinot Grigio Reduction
- Not that much sauce in this dish. The noodles tasted very dry and I didn't end up finishing this plate. One of the shrimp still had their shells on. Another disappointment.

Dessert: Dark Belgium Chocolate Crème Brûlée, Candied Lemon & Fresh Berries
- I want to say this was my favourite part of their menu but I can't. Not after I started feeling sick after my entree. I'm pretty sure there were no candied lemon but I will give some credit for the bold flavour of belgium chocolate.

May I add that service was pretty slow and the complimentary breads were partially stale. I will be honest though and say that I arrived at the restaurant with little expectation, considering that their Summerlicious menu were the same for lunch and dinner. My friend and I were tempted to finish the day off with some french food at Midi Bistro but with no appetite, that didn't happen. Sad face.

Looking forward to trying a couple of restaurants in New York for Restaurant Week 2011! I'm super excited that they extended it through September 5th. Attended my first Summerlicious restaurant this year at Sassafraz, located in the heart of Yorkville. Felt under dressed at first but me and my friend slowly forgot about it as we enjoyed our meals. We left the restaurant with a smile on our face as the food and service exceeded our expectations. Even though we did find a piece of hair in our bread basket, we were way too satisfied to even bother bringing it up to our server. It was nice of our server to fold our cloth napkins while we were away from the table and how they got rid of the bread crumbs on our table. Definitely going back for their regular menu.

Going to end this post with this picture. Although I couldn't finish the Dark Chocolate Cherry Domino pastry (too much chocolate for my taste buds), you can't go wrong when it's $26 per person. I'm not kidding.

Satisfied ANOTHER craving at MoRoCo Chocolat today (I had to stop by since it was a block away). I can definitely taste the $2.50 when I took a bite in the Pistachio and Passionfruit macarons as i'm typing this. Mind you I just got back from dinner at Milestones and I still managed to chow down these amazing french pastries. Words can't even describe how amazing the flavours are. I had to pass on the coconut flavour though - maybe next time.

It was definitely fun being a foodie for the day. Having guests over from out of the province gives my family a reason to go out and pig out. Daddy took all of us to "Crown Prince Fine Dining" and this by far took the #1 spot on my "dimsum" list. Oddly enough, we were having dimsum in European setting (weird, I know) - paintings of the renaissance era and the silverware did not even look "asian". I would've loved to take a picture of every dish but when it comes to dining with my parents, I'd get scolded for even holding a camera HENCE the picture of "everything". Dishes that I love to order are the tripes and black bean spare ribs. Har gow and siu mai are getting boring.

Rest of the weekend consists of...well, I'm not even sure myself but all I can tell you is that there will be a lot of family time that's for sure. Oh, and catching up on my psych and accounting homework/notes.

On another note: got an interview with Tiffany and Co. and I am uber nervous, considering that they are a luxury brand and the current employees are a lot older and more mature. What does that have to do with it? Who knows, I over-think a lot of things sometimes.Michellehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02862963049343137765noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2186566387397581293.post-55333559851793099042010-09-06T01:37:00.005-04:002010-09-06T03:15:01.361-04:00Shopping Dilemma
I'm planning on doing a huge splurge next summer (when and IF I get a job) to reward myself for finishing 3 years of university *laugh out loud*. I know, what a fatty right? I'm so bored and tired of the typical franchises (i.e. Jack Astors, Moxies, Baton Rouge, Kelsey's and more) and Summerlicious gave me the opportunity to try unique fine dining restaurants at a fixed price. The last restaurant out of my Summerlicious list before I fly off to Las Vegas in less than 10 hours. I originally had 6 but couldn't fit all that in one week. Again, please excuse the quality of the photos; Boiler House emitted very minimal lighting.

Location: 55 Mill St, Toronto (Distillery District) (416)203-2121, $$$

Here's a breakdown of what I ordered:

Chilled Sweet Pea Veloute, Garlic Chips and Mint Crème Fraiche
- Definitely something new and I'm glad that I tried it. Had a bite of my friend's Baked Asparagus Strudel and is definitely recommended.

8oz Ontario AAA Angus Sirloin, Pomme Pont Neuf, Grilled Local Asparagus, Braised Cipollini Onion Jus
- The steak would've been perfect if I had it medium-rare. I ordered well done originally since my filet burger from Bier Markt was too red and chewy.

Strawberry & Rhubarb Crumble
- My favourite dessert during Summerlicious. This definitely tops the two creme brulee desserts I had at previous restaurants.

OVERALL: 8/10

Credits: Toronto's Summerlicious 2010Michellehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02862963049343137765noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2186566387397581293.post-79210869330869922452010-07-14T02:03:00.005-04:002010-07-15T01:31:32.070-04:00The Sultan's Tent & Cafe Moroc

Something new for my friends and I: Moroccan food. It was the second time that I was late for a Summerlicious reservation, thus a "Michelle time" came to exist. I guess I wasn't meant to bus/subway to go from Point A to B. Nothing to talk about lately but I am heading to Vegas/LA next Thursday so I'm super excited as it is my first time. I will definitely be in tourist mode, taking pictures of almost everything I see. I am hoping to bump into a celebrity, just to say i've been in a close proximity of one since concerts don't count.

Summer updates: Demetres visit during Toronto's heat wave, Booster Juice to keep me and my friend hydrated, Mr. Green Jeans to watch the FIFA game between Germany and Spain, Blueberry Cheezecake (alcoholic drink with a smoothie texture - I hate Absolut but this was an exception), chicken chilli nachos to keep me busy during the game, and a quick stop to Petite Thuet where I had my first macaroon but stale ones left a bad impression - second time's the charm?

Summerlicious in Toronto officially starts tomorrow and I have my first reservation at Bier Markt for their dinner menu. I'm excited for their banana creme brule. I can't remember when I last had a creme brule...

Did I include how sad I was when Germany lost to Spain? Good thing I had my dose of Bud Light Lime when it all ended. For that, I hope Netherlands win the world cup.
